LITERATURE AND THE CITY
INTRODUCTION
Dear Reader,
This website is the collaborative effort of a group of University of Hong Kong (HKU) students, who were enrolled at the class ENGL3041 Senior Colloquium: Literature and the City. As part of their final assessment in their final year of study, these English majors had to each write an essay on materials learnt in class, with the use of external materials as well. The essays collected in this website are the final outcomes of the abovesaid assignment, and are all related to the course's main theme: literature and the city. There are four sub-sections under the overall theme, which are: Gender and Identity; Urban Spaces; Race and Empire; and Narrative and Genre. Each section has three essays.
We hope our work will not only bring you back in time to the eighteenth, nineteenth centuries, but may also shed some light on the persisting relevance of the English literature from these periods. As a group of students from Hong Kong and other Asian countries, we have drawn various links between such literature and our own experiences and living environments. Readers may be interested in seeing how English literature could possibly be linked to Hong Kong and Asia. Moreover, we would like to invite you to do the same-- personalise your own reading experience of this website.
Enjoy!
Yours truly,
HKU Literature and the City class (2016)
